New Year – New Look Website
South Manchester Helen O'Grady
As the new year arrives so does our new look website. We hope you find it easier to navigate around and also it gives access to all the previous blog posts made by yours truly. This was something we were unable to do on the previous site. What this now means is that instead of only being able to view the last 5 blog posts, you can now look back to the beginning of SMHOG and see the wonderful times and photographs we have taken of our students enjoying our acting classes and drama classes. Many thanks goes to Richard who is another member of the SMHOG team but prefers to remain in the background. However, you may catch the odd glimpse of him working backstage at our end of year shows. He is an invaluable member of the team.
As many of you now Andy has had a shoulder problem so he missed his lessons last week. Our newest member Julie Broadbent did an admirable job in covering Andy’s classes together with Ruth but we hope to see Andy back this week as his shoulder improves. It all goes to show that if you exert yourself you need to warm up first!! We have been receiving queries all week about the Academy resulting from google searches. If you have searched google and landed on this website then let me tell you a little about us. We operate a curriculum based method of learning which instills confidence and self esteem in children through drama and acting. This is a tried and tested method which was started by Helen O’Grady herself over thirty years ago in Australia. It is now taught in many countries around the world and it is great to regularly get to meet those principals operating from abroad and spreading the Helen O’Grady word.
SMHOG currently have nine studios teaching acting classes and drama classes in Altrincham, Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Chorlton, Gatley, Sale, Stretford, Timperley and Urmston. The classes range from 5 to 8 years for lower primary children, 9 to 12 years for upper primary children and youth for 12 to 18 year olds. We have a couple of Kindy drama classes for children aged from 2 years in their pre-school years. We are currently researching venues and areas where we can expand and bring more classes to children and youth. We also have the opportunity to provide confidence building lessons to the sixth form age group. These “Back Yourself” classes are designed to help and encourage young persons to gain confidence in interview technique, presentation and communication. All three skills could be vital if they need to pass an interview or presentation to get to even higher education. Of course, the same applies if they go for a job interview.
We pride ourselves on the achievements of our students. Many come to us shy and retiring and after taking part in the programme we see massive improvements in their confidence and ability. We have some students who have been with us for 13 years and some who have been only for a few weeks. All children improve and we allow them to take their own time doing it. There is no pressure on them to achieve but they do so because the curriculum allows them to do so whilst having fun and enjoyment.
