Performance Term 2014
South Manchester Helen O'Grady

It may be the Easter break but we are hard at work at Smhog getting everything together for our world famous performance, well nearly world famous!! The shows require an extraordinary amount of behind the scenes preparation before we actually get to the theatre. Over the Easter Break we have acquired a new storage facility which we need to fill with our costume, props and scenery so we can access it much more easily. This will allow us to build new sets and props to use during the new shows our students will be performing making them even more professional and exciting.

This follows on from the very successful Manchester Seminar of Northern Helen O’Grady Principals at the English Martyr’s Parish Hall in Urmston. Our thanks go to the venue proprietor, Pippa, for the excellent food and drink we were provided and the venue itself is second to none. Several of the principals recommended the sausage rolls which were of an exceptionally high quality. At the seminar we get to act out portions of the plays we have our students performing and can exchange ideas of sets, scenery, costume and blocking of the movement. It also allows the inner performer in all of us to appear even for a short period of time and the amount of co-operation amongst everyone who attended is excellent.

In the background we have sourced rolls of fabric to make new costumes and also we have prepared the master scripts for our teachers to begin their interpretation of the shows. Last year we invested in our own sound equipment so Aidan is keen to have the sound effects list and the order of music so he can then prepare the sound plot and help Andy concentrate on building whatever new items they need. Rumour has it that Andy will be building a piano so we wait with anticipation to see it.

Our classes are designed to give children confidence and self-esteem through drama based activities. We consider our curriculum based program of learning to be the best available  and second to none. Our classes are all inclusive and children who take part in the activities are encouraged to engage with others providing them with the necessary life skills so valuable in later life. Employment and opportunities within higher education and universities are increasingly being obtained following interview and presentation. A confident child becomes a confidence adult and their performance is invariably better. In addition som of our children join our Casting agency called Aardvark Casting South Manchester as their skills and abilities in drama grow. We have regular opportunities for our current agency students.
