SMHOG in 2014
South Manchester Helen O'Grady
Happy New Year to all at SMHOG. As we enter into an exciting New Year we are striving to bring you the best curriculum based drama classes and acting classes designed to increase confidence, ability, self-esteem and life skills in children and young persons. In the coming year we are hoping to set up a new adult class and are currently researching local venues in order to achieve this. We have also received a lot of feedback in respect of providing classes on a Saturday and, once again, we are researching local venues to be able to offer this service. If you would like to have information about either of these once we get it then either email us at email@example.com or ring the office on 0161 929 9586.
Classes start again week commencing the 6th January 2014 and we have a brand new curriculum for the coming term. As part of the ongoing training of all our teachers they will be attending the Manchester Helen O’Grady Seminar this week to learn about the new curriculum and how to apply it. If I get a chance I’ll try and get some pictures of your teachers taking part in the training event. One of the great things about the seminar is that you get to meet teachers and principals from all around the country and beyond. We also have principals from Turkey and Malta coming to this country to be part of what we consider to be the best and most efficient drama classes and acting classes. This means we can share details of our collective experiences and good practice to improve the quality of the teaching at our acting classes and drama classes.
We welcome a new teacher to SMHOG. Julie Broadbent is a great talent and we are glad to have her on board. She is well known locally as a director and choreographer at local performances and also appears regularly on stage with a number of the local societies in the South Manchester area. She is initially being trained in the Kindy Drama area of the business which is aimed at 2 to 4 year olds in preparation of them attending school. Research has shown that children involved in these type of pre-school activities are more communicative when at school and progress quickly whilst at school. They are generally more social and interact better with other children and teachers. Julie is now in addition to Andy Kielty, the Principal who teaches drama classes at Altrincham, Sale and Urmston, Ruth Swift, the deputy Principal, Cheryl Kelly who teaches drama classes at Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Chorlton and Gatley; and Melissa Ward who teaches drama classes at Timperley and Stretford.
If this is the first time that you have landed on this blog then we currently have 9 studios providing drama classes and acting classes in Altrincham, Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Chorlton, Gatley, Sale, Stretford, Timperley and Urmston with more on the way, hopefully. We have differing age groups comprising of lower primary, upper primary and youth groups so children and youth of all ages are catered for. At the end of the academic year we have a performance where the students are able to showcase their learning and ability to a wider audience namely, parents, grandparents and friends. Our recent parents’ evenings at all studios were a fantastic success with many parents getting involved and taking part in the drama and acting activities during the classes. Check out the facebook page at www.facebook.com/smhoggi for examples of parents and students working together in the classes. They all seem to be having a great time.
It is easy to give your child a head start on life. Send them to SMHOG and watch them progress and achieve. A lot of future opportunities in getting employment or even getting a place at University can be dependent on an interview which requires the student to be a good communicator and articulate. This is the aim of our programme as each student is allowed to improve at their own rate and develop in the way they wish. Students are encouraged to push themselves and set individual goals but they are not imposed or forced. This means that the aim of the academy is learning through fun and enjoyment based on drama classes and acting classes. Students of all abilities are welcome and we cater for children and youth who has disabilities.
